Writer, Director, Producer
Few Indian show-runners are at the top of their game and ready to claim a space in the global market. Suparn Varma, a writer, director, and show-runner, is one such powerhouse and is widely known as one of the busiest creatives in Bollywood.
A native of Mumbai, Suparn began his film career by writing the action feature “CHHAL” (2002) for award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta. He made his directorial debut with “EK KHILADI EK HASEENA” (2005), a story of two con men. Balancing writing and directing, his second directorial project was “ACID FACTORY” (2009), starring Irrfan Khan and Manoj Bajpayee.
After his success in feature films, Suparn transitioned to television for OTT, directing the mini-series “YO KYA HUA BRO” (2017). He then wrote his first television project, “HASMUKH” (2020), starring Vir Das, which premiered as the #1 show on Netflix India. Building on this momentum, he wrote and directed several episodes of the Amazon hit “THE FAMILY MAN” Season 2 (2021), which became one of the most critically acclaimed shows to come out of India. His work earned him prestigious awards, including the Filmfare OTT Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, Critics.
Suparn served as the showrunner and director for the Indian adaptation of “THE GOOD WIFE,” renamed “THE TRIAL,” for Disney+ Hotstar. He also co-directed “RANA NAIDU,” the Indian adaptation of “RAY DONOVAN,” for Netflix, which has been renewed for a second season. Additionally, he produced the Zee Studios original feature “SIRF EK BANDAA KAAFI HAI,” directed by Apoorv Singh Karki and starring Manoj BajpayeeThe film received stellar reviews and attracted a large initial audience on the Zee platform, which led to a limited theatrical run and made it a National Award contender. Since then, it has garnered multiple awards and continues to be recognized as one of the top films released on OTT in recent years.
Suparn also wrote and co-directed “SULTAN OF DELHI,” a drama series based on the book of the same name, which debuted on Disney+ Hotstar in October 2023. Most recently, Suparn co-wrote Hansal Mehta’s “LOOTERE,” which was released in March 2024 on Disney+ Hotstar to widespread critical acclaim. He is currently in production for Season 2 of “RANA NAIDU,” which he is co-directing once again, and is also in development for multiple films and series with both Netflix and Amazon.
